'Trans is Natural': Drag Queens Scale El Capitan with Massive Pride Flag to Defy Trump

In Yosemite National Park, a group of transgender activists decided to teach President Trump a lesson by hoisting a massive trans pride flag on El Capitan, the iconic rock formation.

The group of transgender and queer climbers unfurled a 55-by-35-foot transgender pride flag on the rocks in what they described as an "act of solidarity."

The flag, the largest ever flown over the iconic rock formation, was part of a project called "Trans is Natural"– The climbers wore expressive outfits, including drag costumes, to symbolize pride and visibility in nature.

The display was raised approximately 1,500 feet up the rock face and was visible to spectators in the valley below.

A video posted by Environmentalist and drag performer Pattie Gonia wore a themed costume resembling a park ranger outfit, featuring a name tag that read “Gay,” showed the climbers unfurling the flag in a crevice of El Capitan.

"Some carry hate; we carry the largest trans pride flag ever flown in a national park and unfurled it on the side of El Cap to prove a point," Gonia said in the video. "Trans is natural. The Trump administration and transphobes would love to have you believe that being trans is unnatural."

"They try to erase us from government websites, education systems and libraries," Gonia continued. "Call it a protest, call it a celebration. We are bringing elevation to liberation."

The group's press release, obtained by Daily Caller, described the action as "a celebration of trans belonging in nature, in community, and everywhere."

The flag is "a visual and spiritual anchor for all those who have been made to feel out of place in their bodies or in this country," the group claimed.

The spectacle follows recent executive orders by President Trump to remove references to transgender individuals from government websites, including the National Park Service’s webpage on the Stonewall Uprising, which deleted mentions of trans activists Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera in February and March.

The letters "T" and "Q" were also removed from the acronym LGBTQ on other park service pages.

Yosemite park officials ordered the flag to be taken down at approximately 11:30 a.m. PST, citing no specific rule violations.

The group's spokesperson issued a statement saying it complied with the order for safety precautions, noting, "Yosemite park officials ordered the Trans Pride flag to be taken down from The Heart of El Cap, despite no rules having been broken in the unfurling. For the safety of the team, the Trans Pride flag has been taken down."
