After four years of a wide-open border, it’s refreshing to finally see grateful refugees offered safety in the United States.
On Monday, 59 white South Africans were greeted at Washington Dulles International Airport by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
“I want you all to know that you are really welcome here and that we respect what you have had to deal with these last few years,” he said.
Earlier that day, President Donald Trump said white Afrikaners are facing a genocide, a claim disputed in South African court.
“It’s a terrible thing that’s taking place,” Trump said. “Farmers are being killed. They happen to be white. But whether they’re white or black makes no difference to me.”
"White farmers are being brutally killed and their land is being confiscated,” he continued. “And the media … doesn't even talk about it. If it were the other way around, that would be the only story they talk about."
Trump added: “I don’t care about their race, their color, I don’t care about their height, their weight, I don’t care about anything, I just know that what’s happening is terrible.”

A statement like this from the President of the United States was unthinkable even months ago, let alone a special refugee program.pic.twitter.com/lFsQDCCwTt
Though the president made clear his indifference to race when protecting victims of crime, corporate press outlets are denouncing this humanitarian effort.
“It’s so deeply and morally wrongheaded and repulsive,” former Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Rick Stengel said on MSNBC, slamming the refugees as descendants of the architects of apartheid.
“The Afrikaners have become the darling of these right-wing, white supremacist movements around the world.,” he said. “It’s like the lost cause for them, it’s like the old Confederacy.”
Trump’s perpetual critics want to frame this move as a racist dog whistle, but the whiteness of the 59 immigrants isn’t necessarily the most striking aspect of the video showing their arrival.

Yes, they’re white, but they’re also smiling; they appear to be genuinely grateful and appreciative to be welcomed to a country that can take additional measures to ensure their safety and freedom from murderous criminals.
Moreover, a significant portion of the group is comprised of young people and small children who are accompanied by their families. This is a far cry from the majority male populations that crossed the U.S. border illegally in recent years.
The third, and perhaps the most endearing, aspect of the video is the American flags the Afrikaners are waving. Rather than defiantly flying their native flag after illegally entering the U.S., these refugees display their patriotism. The love that a legal immigrant has for the country that offers safe haven from danger is unmatched.
It’s pathetic and appalling how the minions of the corporate press keep turning back to the same tired playbook of insisting that Trump is a racist xenophobe. He clearly doesn’t hate immigrants, although he doesn’t especially care for illegal immigrants who hate our country.
The U.S. needs patriotic, appreciative immigrants who share our core values; immigrants who treasure safety, freedom, and liberty; immigrants who work hard to secure a better future for their children. If we can have immigrants like this, we should take them. We have plenty of room.
